Sent to Roscommon County Council 4 minutes later
On Sunday the 04th July 2021 while out on a club spin with a Sligo Cycling Club (Bottechia Cycling Club) we were travelling from Boyle to Gorteen on the R294. As we passed under the bridge on the Sligo to Dublin railway line, structure UB543, a number of riders in our group (5 of 6) lost grip and fell at the corner immediately after the bridge. See attached photo of the location. Road conditions were dry on the approach but damp under the bridge. We were riding cautiously at this point due to the damp conditions and the group was made up of seasoned cyclists. Despite our caution, the poor condition of the road surface combined with the damp made this surface unnavigable by bicycle even at a slow speed. A number of our riders were hospitalised in the incident and we were later informed that another cyclist crashed at the same corner on the same day and was hospitilised. We have spoken with the clubs in our region and they have had incidents at this location also. The surface, speaking as an Engineer, appears to be rutted, polished and the chips have been pulled from the bitumen leaving an unsuitable road surface. It also appears that trench reinstatement has been carried out in this section of road. We would implore Roscommon County Council to remediate this area immediately as it is possible that an even more serious incident could occur at this location in the future, particularly if a car was traveling in the opposite direction direction. It is, we must stress, completely unrideable in all but the driest of conditions for any cyclist. We would also suggest that Roscommon County Council should highlight on their Social Media Pages that this area has been flagged as unsafe for riding and that a number of incidents have occured. I would appreciate if you could respond to me in regard to this situation.
